Programs that offer therapeutic sessions that focus on the system of relationships and communication patterns among family members and which attempt to modify those relationships and patterns to achieve greater harmony. The therapist focuses on the family as a unit rather than concentrating on one of the members who is singled out as the person in need of treatment.

Programs that offer therapist-facilitated collective treatment sessions in which unrelated groups of individuals, couples or families discuss their attitudes, feelings and problems and, with input from other members of the group, attempt to achieve greater self and interpersonal understanding and adjustment and explore solutions to their problems.

Programs that offer personal therapeutic sessions in which the therapist works on a one-to-one basis with clients to help them resolve their mental, emotional or social problems.

Programs that provide individual, conjoint, family or group treatment for people who are experiencing physical, sexual, emotional and/or other forms of abuse in the context a marital, parental, sibling or other family relationship or, in some instances, outside the family. Included are programs that provide therapeutic interventions for perpetrators and/or for individuals who have been victimized.

Individuals who are generally between the ages of 18 and 25 depending on the ages that specific programs use for qualification.

The parents, siblings, friends or other relatives of children who have been subjected to a persistent pattern of violence and/or neglect whose own patterns of personal, social and familial coping have been significantly affected by concern about the child and/or their own role in a family affected by child abuse. Child abuse includes emotional abuse, emotional deprivation, physical abuse and corporal punishment that results in a traumatic condition, physical neglect and/or inadequate supervision and/or sexual abuse or exploitation, any of which is perpetrated by the adults and/or family members responsible for their care.

Individuals who willfully inflict physical, sexual or emotional abuse on their mates or intimate partners.

Individual practitioners, programs, and/or systems whose approach to engaging people with a history of trauma involves recognition of the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledgement of the role that trauma has played in their lives. The approach can be implemented in any type of service setting or organization and has been used in the delivery of a broad range of services including mental health, substance use, housing, vocational or employment support, domestic violence and victim assistance, and peer support. However, it is distinct from trauma-specific interventions or treatments that are designed specifically to address the consequences of trauma and to facilitate healing.

Adult women who have been subjected to a persistent pattern of physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse and intimidation by their husbands or intimate partners.

Individuals younger than age 18 who have been sexually assaulted by a family member, acquaintance or stranger or who have been subjected to sexual exploitation in the form of child prostitution or child pornography.
